Leveling
There are 2 leveling systems similar to Final Fantasy III, your character level and job level. When you win a battle, you will get both EXP and ability points (ABP), which is another EXP for jobs.
Job System
When you level up a job, you will also unlock its abilities, then you are free to equip these abilities. However, most jobs can only equip one ability at a time. For example, you level up White Mage to Lv. 2, now you unlocked White Magic Lv. 2 ability. When you change jobs to Black Mage and set White Magic Lv. 2, you can access White Magic up to level-2 spells.
There are 2 types of abilities, active and passive. Active abilities are abilities you can use during a battle, while passive abilities give you additional perks or stats. For example, MP +30% increases your max MP by 30%, or Two-Handed allows the character to wield a weapon with two hands (double the damage).
Freelancer (default job) is special because it can equip 2 abilities. For example, you can equip Black Magic Lv. 6 and White Magic Lv. 6 abilities at the same time. Additionally, Freelancer inherits stats and passive abilities from jobs you have learned or mastered, which means that the more jobs you master, the stronger the Freelancer job is. Also, Freelancer can equip all weapons and armor in the game without restriction.
Mime is another special job. It can equip up to 4 abilities (by removing Attack and Items commands). It has its own ability called Mimic, which copies the previous action.
Maximum Stats
Stats in this game are fixed, so you can't permanently max out your stats. At level 99, your HP will reach 9999, but not MP (it'll be 800+).
You can temporarily boost your stats during a battle by using the Hero's Rime song. This song will continuously increase your stats until they reach maximum.
Game Tips
- When using an INN or Cottage, your entire party is fully healed and revived, and all ailment statuses are removed.
- There is no "Run"; instead, you press L1 + R1 (number key 2 + 3) at the same time to escape from battle.
- You can still use weapons as items to cast magic; however, most items will break after a single use, but they are far more powerful. For example, Flame Rod casts Firaga or Staff of Light casts Holy when used as an item, but they will break after a single use.
- You can switch between characters who have full ATB gauge to perform an action first by pressing the "Tab" key during a battle.
Pixel Remaster Features
- Viewing Bestiary: There are 2 ways you can view the bestiary:
(1) From the main menu, "Main Menu" -> "Extra" -> "Bestiary".
(2) During gameplay, "Menu" -> "Configuration" -> "Bestiary".
While on the bestiary page, you can press the Y button (or Tab on keyboard) to view monster locations on the map. It provides a nice visual on the map.
Unknown monsters will be displayed as question marks, so you cannot rely on the in-game bestiary list. You can view a full list of the bestiary here to complete your achievement. - Turn on/off "Encounters": This is an invaluable feature. I normally turn it on when I want to go through a dungeon quickly.
- Boost: The new update includes a feature "Boost". It allows you to increase "EXP" and "Money" earned from battle. Just in case you don't want to spend time grinding, this is your go-to setting.
- Quick Save: Use "Quick Save" frequently, especially before a boss fight.
