Cecil Harvey is a Dark Knight captain in the service of Baron, a once-peaceful kingdom turned aggressive military power. When his king orders him to slaughter innocents to collect powerful elemental crystals, Cecil questions his loyalty — and pays for it by being stripped of his command. Joined by his childhood friend Kain, his love Rosa, a young Summoner named Rydia, and a cast of allies each with their own grievances, Cecil embarks on a journey to stop Baron's destruction. The road leads him to Mt. Ordeals, where he must literally shed his dark past and transform into a Paladin — the game's emotional centerpiece and the moment the story shifts from soldier's doubt to full-blown redemption arc.

The villain pulling strings is Golbez, a sorcerer of overwhelming power who stays a step ahead of the party at nearly every turn — and whose connection to Cecil forms the dramatic backbone of the second half. What begins as a grounded story of conscience and betrayal eventually expands beyond the world entirely, with a scope that would have felt audacious in 1991 and still holds up today. Party members join and leave unexpectedly, some permanently, so this guide will flag those moments in advance. If you've never played Final Fantasy IV before, you're in for one of the best stories the genre has produced.
